Holy Maxime and Venerand
Holy Maxime and Venerand were two brothers; they underwent martyrdom because they refused to disavow their faith as a Jesus-Christ.
One calls upon them in times of great dryness to obtain the rain.
They are honoured particularly in Evreux where most of their holy relics are.
Made, Ô my God, who the happy saints that you gave us for friends and lawyers near you, become in this day our intercessors and obtain your kindness to us the rain necessary to the goods of the ground, so that we can bless with them your Divine Providence. We request some from you by NS. J. – C. Amen.
Holy Maxime and Venerand, which one calls upon in all confidence to have of the rain, request for us of this time of disastrous dryness.
Ô my crucified Jesus Saver! When I contemplate you with faith and piety that reasons of love and confidence for you is had a presentiment of in my heart! And how, Ô my Saver! Could I not love you? you who, without any merit of my share, prevented me your love, and pushed it to you to deliver gladly with the hands of your enemies, and the Crucifixion, to take on you I punishment which I had deserved by my crimes.
Which brother would like to thus replace his brother, which father with his son, and which wife with her husband, to suffer in his place a deserved punishment? I represent myself a criminal condemned legitimately to die by the judge, and who waits each hour the execution of his sentence. A friend of this criminal comes to find him in his dungeon, takes his clothing and his chains, gets freedom to him, and is let lead to his place with the torment. Could such a devotion, if there existed, be never enough admired? And what should be the love and the recognition of the culprit who would have been delivered, towards his innocent liberator?
